At Woodtek Engineering, we manufacture and deliver fully turnkey biochar systems designed for long-term commercial operation. Our flagship C1000 technology underpins the UK’s largest EBC-grade biochar production sites, delivering the highest volumes of certified biochar. At our own factory, a C1000 generates carbon-negative heat and power that is used to manufacture further C1000 systems, demonstrating the technology’s energy efficiency, reliability, and ability to scale through its own output. Our strong points are manufacturing reliable biochar solutions, utilizing the waste heat energy from biochar production, using biochar in agriculture, developing the UK biochar market.

ecoLocked is turning buildings into carbon sinks - and helps you do so, too. We have built an end-to-end solution that converts captured carbon from local biomass residues into functional, carbon-negative concrete admixes, which replace cement or aggregates and permanently store CO₂ in buildings.

Whether you produce biochar, manage biomass residues, or make concrete, we provide everything needed to set up a scalable biochar in concrete operation. Using our Carbon-to-Concrete Platform, including our Concrete Integration System with a database of 800+ concrete tests across 100+ biochars, as well as our Processing Hub Technology, we enable compliant, low-cost production of CO₂-negative building materials, all supported by digital quality management, material flow tracking, and MRV.

Founded in 2006, the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) empowers communities and inspires industries to integrate biochar-based solutions towards healthier ecosystems and economies worldwide. IBI’s mission is to scale biochar to reach its full potential and achieve global net zero targets by empowering communities and industries. Through strategic partnerships, innovation, education and advocacy, they aim to accelerate and scale the adoption of biochar technologies worldwide, fostering sustainable business models, and facilitate community-based action that combats climate change and create a resilient future for generations to come.

The Italian Biochar Association (ICHAR) is the national reference point for the scientific, technical and cultural development of biochar in Italy. It connects knowledge, people and practices to support the responsible and sustainable deployment of biochar across agriculture, environmental management and circular economy applications. ICHAR promotes training, outreach, pilot projects and policy dialogue, fostering collaboration between research institutions, companies, professionals and public authorities. Through its national network and strong links with the international biochar community, ICHAR works to advance soil regeneration, climate change mitigation and the decarbonisation of productive sectors.

The Coalition for Negative Emissions (CNE) aims to build momentum, shape policy, and develop the market for negative emissions globally.

CNE is made up of a diverse range of companies across industries, from landowners and environmental stewards, large users and generators of energy, to technology start-ups and large manufacturers. Members work across differing sectors of global economies, but share a common vision: to develop and deploy negative emissions at a scale that will create genuine impact across the world.

The Biochar Demonstrator is an interdisciplinary research project addressing the key uncertainties around the extent and scope of the deployment of biochar in the UK. Our work focuses on understanding the stability of biochar with respect to carbon sequestration; together with quantifying its effects on soil health and ecosystem services, economic viability and social acceptability. To build a robust evidence base, we are running field trials across a range of land types, including arable, grassland and forestry sites.

The project is led by Professor Colin Snape at the University of Nottingham, with academics and researchers at Bangor University, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, the University of Leeds, and the Scottish Universities Environment Research Centre (at the University of Glasgow).

The Biochar Demonstrator is one of five demonstrators that is part of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrator (GGR-D) programme, which is developing and testing greenhouse gas removal options to support the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.
